Actors Talk Acting
FEELINGS
We as actors often put way too much attention on the importance of FEELINGS. We often applaud a performance based on the emotionality of the actor. How much he/she can feel. More attention needs to be placed on doing not feeling. Doing implies Rhythm.
The wonderful actor Bill Nighy talks about this.
All Actors Are Terrified
"People [actors] come [to an acting class] with lots of stuff, lots of armour, lots of habit, lots of method... and they want to 'dump it on you,' and it's all tied to fear and ego and all this stuff and you want to try and clean them out, let them be FREE, and if you can get free of that they have these kinds of revelations and stuff happens!"
~ Willem Dafoe
Acting Methods & Techniques
"Actors who go down in a cult of a dogma or a teacher, often when you work with them, the first thing you notice is that they are just NEVER LISTENING."
~ Ed Norton
The Cult of Dogma in Acting Techniques
"I am against dogma and particular acting techniques. Some techniques instead of empowering you can actually imprison you as an actor. I have never believed in acting teachers becoming gurus."
~ Robert Benedetti (Director/Teacher)
Study!
The importance of words, and how only through rehearsal and repetition can an actor arrive at a freedom and a spontaneity in his work. He discusses Marlon Brando and the Moscow Art theatre.
~ Peter O'Toole
Actor / Director Mark Rylance Advice
Mark Rylance talking about the importance of not geting too cerebral, planning ahead on 'how' a scene should be performed. Often too much thinking and talking about 'how a scene should be played' suppresses an actor's creativity and takes him/her 'out of the moment.' He talks about the importance of listening to one's fellow actor.
~ Mark Rylance
